When Do I Need to Hire a Lactation Consultant?

Updated: Mar 10, 2023

There are so many things to think of when preparing for your little one's arrival. What kind of birth do you expect to have? Will you deliver at a hospital or at home? Which baby things do you really need? WHY are there so many baby names to choose from? Ultimately, there isn't a bad time to hire a lactation consultant, but here is what you can expect:

Before Delivery

You may not even think of considering a lactation consultant until after baby is born, and IF there are problems with nursing. That's just fine. However, it can be helpful (and less stressful) to have lactation advice on hand before delivery so that if problems arise, you don't add "find a lactation consultant near me ASAP" to your list of things to do. A lactation consultant can answer any questions you may have and be able to set you up for success when baby arrives. This can be helpful, too, to develop a relationship before birth so that we are on the same page and ready to tackle any obstacles together.

Postpartum Support

Breastfeeding is hard! It's something new to conquer while you're exhausted and sleep deprived and recovering from birth, all while trying to enjoy those sleepy moments with your baby. It is a much lighter load with someone alongside you helping to ease the insecurities and offering solutions to problems that arise. I am here to help you and your baby learn together and be successful. If you are experiencing pain while nursing, have cracked or sore nipples, are worried about baby's weight gain, or generally just don't know what to do, NOW is a great time to seek support. The good news- most problems surrounding breastfeeding can be fixed!

Breastfeeding Group

Breastfeeding Group is a great way to meet with a lactation consultant, and meet other moms who are in your stage of life. You can expect weighted feeds (weighing baby before and after feeding to see how much he/she is transferring), conversation about struggles and advice from a certified lactation consultant. This can be so life-giving to have community and people around you to help.
